His research has had significant impact beyond academia. This is best understood through the creation of Geolive. Geolive is a web and mobile-based participatory mapping tool developed under his supervision by a team of programmers at UBC Okanagan. The application allows users to create and share spatial information using a web-based map interface. To date, Geolive is being applied to 25 projects from Palawan in the Philippines to local forest fire issues in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.
